Commanders' MessageWow, what a challenging year with COVID the focus of all of us. As we transition back into somewhat of a normal lifestyle, I encourage us to continue to move forward. As we transition into the year with new officers, I want to thank those who have served before me and hope that all Legionnaires will consider helping our Post somehow. I ask that you get involved, meet, and know your fellow Legionnaires, and let us have some fun along the way. Having said this, your executive committee has laid out the calendar for the upcoming year. We will try and get this out to all members. I also ask that you look at your Post newsletter that is mailed to you monthly for upcoming events. I know there are some good cooks out there. I am looking for anyone who would like to create the menu and cook a meal for our Post meetings. Give me a call @ 919-358-5591 to discuss. American Legion membership can save you money. Discount programs for products and services such as travel, health care, personal finance, and computers are offered exclusively to members of The American Legion. Be sure to check these out on the American Legion National website. If you are a Paid Member and have not called to activate your FREE $5,000.00 Accidental Death Insurance, please call 1-800-235-6943. You will need to have your Membership number. Even the call is free, so please call to activate or check to make sure you have your coverage—just one more benefit of being a member of the American Legion. I want to take a moment and explain how membership in the American Legion works. The renewal process begins on July 1 for the upcoming membership year. Renewal notices are sent out in July, October, January, March, and May. When a member renews, they are removed from future renewal notices for that year. There are times when a member pays their dues, but they still receive a renewal notice. If dues are paid to the local Post, it takes a little longer for national to be notified about the renewal, and the member may receive another renewal notice. Ways to renew: (1) Go to MyLegion.org online, (2) Mail your dues in when you receive your renewal notice, (3) Give them to Post Adjutant at a meeting. Help us reduce waste by renewing your membership asap when you receive your notice. So, what does this all mean? When you get your first Renewal Notice, I ask that you go ahead and renew your membership and save the American Legion the cost of mailing 2nd, 3rd, 4th renewal notices. Important Dates: Department Convention, June 10, 11, 12, North Raleigh Hilton; Legion College, July 9, 10, North Raleigh Hilton. I would encourage all officers or those who would like to consider becoming an officer to attend Legion Collage. For God & Country, Harvey Satterwhite, Commander Post 52 Chaplain's Corner"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you. Trust in the LORD, the LORD himself, is the Rock eternal.' — Isaiah 26:3-4 (NIV) Depending on ourselves and our own strength can lead to misery, disaster, and often weigh us down and even depress us. This happens when we become burdened about something and carry it rather than giving it to God. This is not healthy and results in unrest. Yet, when we depend on God, every moment of every day, He gives us perfect peace, "shalom shalom." This word in the original language of the Old Testament carries a meaning of being complete and whole and is often pictured coming from God. If God is perfect peace, let us cling to Him and be in "shalom shalom" perfect peace. When we trust in God, our load is light, our strength increases, our perspectives change, and our attitudes rise to a different altitude. Looking to God always lifts us up. May we spend time reflecting upon the times in our lives when we focused on God and depended on Him daily. May we start and end our day with God. Praying for all, those who are serving, who have served, and for the families represented. The Lord bless you and keep you all, Thomas Reid Auxiliary NotesHello everyone, I hope you all are well. We will start meeting on Tuesday Nights at 5:30 as long as we have a place at the Methodist Church. I will keep you informed monthly. Welcome to our new family; glad you are with us. Please keep Carolyn Rohrer and Linda Kerensky's sister in your prayers. We need everyone that is a member to come to the meeting at the end of the month; we are trying to get new things going for the new year. Executive meetings are still on Mondays at the Legion, and everyone is welcome to attend. Hope to see you all soon. Karen Nowell, President Auxiliary Unit 52 Auxiliary District 6 NewsI had someone ask me what name you use for the Auxiliary. The Auxiliary was known as the Ladies Auxiliary many years ago, but now we are known as American Legion Auxiliary (ALA). In 2019 at the National Convention, male spouses of a female veteran can be members of the ALA. So, you ask, who are we? We are the male and female spouses, grandmothers, mothers, sisters, and direct and adopted female descendants of American Legion members. Some of us are veterans ourselves. Our Mission Statement is, "We are a community of volunteers serving veterans, military, and their families." This column will be my last column for the District 6 News. At the Department Convention in June, I will become the Division II President.
