Commanders' MessageMy fellow Legionnaires, the month of April is here, and with it comes the election of new post officers for the coming year. There remains an opportunity for anyone who wishes to step up and take a leadership role in our Post. We are still searching for nominations for the following post positions: First Vice-commander and Finance Officer. All post officer positions are still open for candidates who aspire to become leaders. If no one steps up, we run the risk of having the same legionnaires in an office every year instead of a genuinely democratic election process. When making your decision to run for office, please remember the last line of our preamble: "To consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness." The Post will be holding our Fish & Oyster Fry Fundraiser on April 2, 2021. This event will have dine-in and take-out service available, and our Auxiliary Unit will have a bake sale as well. We will need volunteers to help work this event on Thursday, April 1, and Friday, April 2, 2021. I am proud to announce that Post 52 has a candidate for Boys State this year. His name is Jackson Carter, and his grandfather and father have also attended this program. His grandfather is a past post commander of our Post. Governor Cooper continues to lift Covid-19 restrictions, but we must remain vigilant regarding our personnel safety. Wearing masks and keeping socially distant at all post activities is still required. We will resume renting the post facility now with the current safety protocols in place. As we approach the coming Post elections and the end of my second year as post commander, I want to thank all the members of post 52 for the incredible support that you have shown me. It has been an honor to serve alongside some of our organization's best legionnaires here in Franklinton. As I prepare for my future endeavors, I will always make time to support Post 52 and its members. As many of you know, I received an appointment to the National Americanism Commission at The American Legion headquarters in Indianapolis. Also, I will be a candidate for Department Commander starting in June after the Department Convention. These opportunities do not become available without the incredible commitment and results achieved by our Post. I want to offer to all the legionnaires of Post 52 congratulations for a job well done! Should you need to contact me for any reason, you can reach me at 919-270-1479 or mcdonnelly51@gmail.com. For God & Country, Mike Donnelly, Commander Post 52 Chaplain's Corner"Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me,for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long." – Psalm 25:4-5 (NIV) Each day is a gift; perhaps that is why they call it the present, and we have a choice of what to do with it. We should all desire to make each day our absolute best. In Psalm 25:4-5, we discover actions to take if we want to please the Lord. (1) Show me your ways - Jesus teaches us to pray, not my will, but His perfect will be done. Discernment is vital in understanding the workings of the Spirit. Listen for His voice, "this is the way; walk in it." (2) Teach me your paths - Just like a parent who instructs a child to walk, God is our Father who will advise us on the paths of life to take. We must take to heart the Father's directions, then walk in it. (3) Guide me in the truth - Having ears to hear; the ability to stop and listen while reading God's Word is key to following the truth with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Let us make the most of God's gift of today and our everyday. Praying for all, those who are serving, who have served, and for the families represented. The Lord bless you and keep you all, Thomas Reid Auxiliary NotesHello everyone, I hope you are doing well. We will continue to have unit meetings at the Legion at night until further notice. The executive meeting will stay the same on the second Monday of every month from 10 to 11. Everyone is welcome to come. Please remember to wear a mask for all meetings until further notice. The ladies will help with the Fish and oyster fry on April 2, from 11 to 6, and holding a bake sale. Please have baked goods to the Post between 10 and 11. If you can help, please let me know. Karen Nowell, President Auxiliary Unit 52 Auxiliary District 6 NewsThe Division II meeting held March 20, 2021, was a great success as District 6 had 13 members who attended. During the Division II meeting, I put in my nomination for Division II President 2021 – 2022. As for other District news, we are getting ready to do the end-of-year reports from all 12 units due April 30, 2021. Membership for the District is at 94.03% as of March 24, 2021. To make Goal, the District needs only 21 memberships. National Poppy Day is Friday, May 28, 2021. Wishing everyone a "Happy Easter!" Carolyn Donnelly, District 6 President |

Bring the Buffalo Soldiers Home |
The following is an excerpt from the "fold3 HQ" by ancestry dated March 22, 2021, by Jenny Ashcraft. ------ The 92nd Infantry Division, also known as Buffalo Soldiers, was the only Black infantry division to see combat in Europe during WWII. They served as part of the U.S. Fifth Army in Italy's Po Valley and the northern Apennine Mountains, where they helped penetrate the Gothic Line (Germany's last major line of defense against Allied forces pushing north). The division paid a heavy price, losing an estimated 700 soldiers. To date, 50 soldiers from the 92nd remain unaccounted for, and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) would like to use DNA analysis from surviving family members to identify them. We're teaming up with the DPAA to help spread the word and track down the families of these fallen soldiers. Let's honor the sacrifices of the 92nd Infantry Division and help bring them home! To positively identify the missing members of the 92 nd, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) started the "92nd Infantry Project" in 2014. Of the 53 soldiers unidentified at the end of the war, 50 are still unaccounted for. One major obstacle that stands in the way of positive identification is family reference DNA samples. • The Armed Forces Medical Examiner System (AFMES) is the agency charged with collecting the DNA samples. They operate under strict laws that prevent any misconduct, and results are kept in a secure AFMES database. The collected DNA samples are only used to identify fallen heroes. If you are the family of someone unaccounted for from the 92nd Infantry Division, please contact the Army Casualty Office at (800) 892-2490 to arrange to give a DNA sample.
