Commanders' Message

Commanders Photo I wanted to start by thanking all those who came out and supported our Fish/Oyster Fry. It takes an excellent Team to get this done from gathering supplies, preparing equipment, preparing the food, cooking, serving, welcoming those who come out to support us, and finally, the cleanup—a lot of work. And again, thanks to all who came out and helped with this and any of our fundraisers. We greatly appreciate the support our community gives us. As a side note, the conversations and the camaraderie are great. I cannot tell you how many of the world's problems we solved while preparing and cooking the food under the shelter.

I remind myself of the motivation and vision of the forefathers of the American Legion from time to time to make sure I do not stray from their intent. With 102 years as an Organization, I thought it very fitting to review our history as a reminder of the Intent or Mission of the American Legion. Our Preamble sparkles with the purest gems of patriotic thought. It reflects all the spiritual glory of Divine precepts. It is remarkable for the simple brevity, compacted, and inspiring pattern for all the future of a free and decent way of life. It has an impact as a tenet of faith in God. Each of the ten clauses of the Preamble, though brief, has a world of meaning. Let us start from the beginning.

For God and Country, we associate ourselves together for the following purposes - This is the introduction. It declares that The American Legion recognizes the influence of Almighty God in all worthwhile endeavors and declares the allegiance of American Legionnaires to both God and our Nation.

With the continued erosion of core beliefs in our nation, I am very proud to stand with an Organization of Men and Women who stand firm in a few of these core beliefs. While diversification or politically correct seem to be buzzwords these days, I see how a man can over-complicate matters. As I look at our county and the diverse culture we live in, now more than ever, we need to recognize God as the Supreme Commander and leader of our nation. His ways should be our ways. Well, you're probably asking if Satterwhite is sitting next to our Chaplain or even my Pastor, and well, I can honestly say this morning, No, but I am in conversation with God.

There are some elections around the corner for some of us. VOTE -- It is our civic duty as American Citizens. KNOW YOUR CANDIDATES -- Ignorance or Party Affiliation should not drive our vote. KNOW WHERE CANDIDATES STAND ON ISSUES -- Not just what they say, but how they voted on issues that affect you and me. That is the proof.

Chaplain's Corner

Chaplian's Photo "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened." Matthew 7:7-8 NIV

Here in this passage, we observe three imperative verbs: Ask. Seek. Knock. God calls us to pray. And prayer is a mystery. Now, why would we communicate with God that which He already knows? Jesus implores us to pray, and prayer was an essential part of Jesus' life. If prayer was a necessary part of Jesus' life, it should be for us too! One commentator notes that "Prayer is part of God's work in us to bring us to a place of humility and a place of dependence upon Him." What do we seek? What do we need God to do for us? All we must do is ask. However, God is not some magical genie in a bottle who bends His will to our selfish desires. Instead, God bends our will towards His. Prayer changes us. Prayer involves a humble heart, dependent upon God. We can plan, we can work, but unless we pray, some things will not happen. Praying for all, those who are serving, who have served, and for the families represented.

The Lord bless you and keep you all, Thomas Reid
