Commanders' Message

Commanders Photo In the days and weeks to come we will be looking for someone to step forward to fill the vacancy of Executive Committeeman and Finance Officer. If you would be willing to help in either capacity please contact me. We also will need help as we continue renovations at the Post. Please consider lending a helping hand for these efforts.

Membership, As of 9/30/18, Division 1 is (1st) in the state, District 5 is (6th) in the state and Post 52 is (7th) in the District. We need your help to have all members renewed by Veterans Day in November. If we can assist you in any way, please let us know.

I often have members ask the question, I paid my membership dues and still received a renewal notice. This is a timing issue. National mails renewal notices 1 July, 1 October, 1 January, 1 March, and 1 May of each year. If your dues are not received at Department 30 days prior to the dates above, you will get a renewal notice. So help us keep cost down and get your dues in when you get the first mailing.

Veterans Day! Scheduled Saturday, November 10th 11:00am. The Service will be followed by free meal for all, hot dogs, hamburgers and the trimming. This event is for ALL Veterans and their families so please plan to come out and join us for good food, fellowship, fun, games, door prizes, and Invite a Veteran to join us.

Get Out and Vote, and if I may ask please know the candidates platform and where they stand on matters.

Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner. We should always remember those who are serving but especially as we approach the holidays I ask that each of you remember and pray for the men and women that are serving in the Armed Forces and their families they leave behind.

For God and Country - Harvey Satterwhite

Vice-Commander's Report

Vice Commanders Photo My fellow legionnaires, every legionnaire is responsible for helping to grow membership at the post. Now is the time to seek out new members and to renew existing memberships. Post 52 needs its members to renew now rather than waiting until later in the year. Our post has been recognized by the Department for all the good work that we do but continuing to build our membership numbers will increase our voice and influence at the department level. We should all strive to make Post 52 a leader in membership recruitment and renewals setting the standard for others to follow.

As October approaches we are getting ready for the Fall Conference in Raleigh on the 18th through the 20th. This will be a busy period with many meetings, but it is also a great opportunity for Legionnaires to witness how the business of the Department of North Carolina is conducted and carried out. I encourage all legionnaires to attend this conference if you are able and have an interest.

Post 52 has open vacancies on the Executive committee and for the position of Financial Officer that must be filled as soon as possible. Should you want to fill one of these positions please make your desires known to Commander Satterwhite or myself as soon as possible.

For God & Country, Mike Donnelly

Historian Comments

Photo George Tracy The question is often asked, “What has the Legion done for me lately?' I can take many tacks at answering this question. One way is to list each bill that has been supported by the Legion before Congress and then mark the ones that were actually past into law. But that wouldn't give you the whole story. It would give you a snapshot in time of what has happened. You can follow us on Facebook and on our Web-site for these answers. I will tell you while this is important it is not the only thing the Legion does.

But while I am talking about legislation, I most point out to you that all legislation that is supported by the Legion has come from its members. People like you and me who find a problem and take the time to write up a resolution. These resolution are reviewed at your Post to get support from your local members and if deemed worthy, are forwarded to the department for review and consideration. Here they are reviewed and presented to the state body at conferences and conventions. Based on content and subject matter they are sent to various committees for review and approval.

At this point your resolution will have one of two outcomes: 1. Rejection and why, or 2. Acceptance and forwarding to National for their review and consideration. Now National has the same process as the department, so based on all of this, it can take as little as one but generally more years to even get before Congress.

Now not all resolution even need to go to Congress. Many are written for the improvement of the Legion in general. Like, adding a new program, (i.e., The Legion Riders, Amateur Radio, and just started in North Carolina, the Cruisers).

As usual I am running my mouth and running out of room. Till next time, your Historian – George G. Tracy
